Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling based martial art focusing on ground-fighting. It uses technique, positioning and leverage to force your opponent into a submission. This can be through chokes or joint manipulation.

BJJ is suitable for all ages, sizes, genders and fitness levels. It is a martial art designed for a smaller, weaker person to control and submit larger and stronger opponents. It is a popular sport for improving fitness as well as for self-defence and is a core element of Mixed-Martial-Arts (MMA).

At Primal, we have classes for adults, including beginners. Classes are held in both NO-GI and GI (a BJJ uniform). If you do not have a GI, gym attire is fine to wear for the first few classes. Please do not wear any metal zips or jewellery that will damage the mats.

All members or Primal Martial Arts Academy can expect to feel part of the community.

What to expect

Adults classes

Primal offers BJJ to adults in both GI or NO-GI. Classes will teach you techniques based on the current topic for the club. If it’s your first class, please arrive 5 minutes before class to meet the coach and introduce yourself. Our classes will then begin with a 10-15 minute warm up. This will include movement based activities such as hip-escapes or forward rolls.

You will be shown a technique based on the current topic. You will have an opportunity to ask questions, then partner-up to drill it yourself, with the coaches help if needed.

Most classes will end with live rolls. This allows you to partner up and roll with a variety of other Primal team members. If you are nervous, let us know and we can try to ensure a suitable partner for you to learn with. There is no pressure to roll with anyone at the end of class. The BJJ coaches are there to keep you safe.

At the end of every class you will line up in rank order facing the coach. This is an opportunity for them to provide any updates and for everyone to say thanks for training.

Grading

Everyone will start as a white belt when they first start BJJ. Grading is a long journey and requires dedication to build the skills needed. You can gain stripes (4 max per belt) and belts as you improve. Adult belts include ranks white, blue, purple, brown and black.

Beginner’s class

Our beginners classes are structured the same as Adults BJJ. The main difference is, instead of live rolls, we usually end classes with ‘specifics’. This involves live drilling from positions at a low intensity. It is a great way to feel the position with slightly more resistance while staying safe.

We also offer a dedicated 9-week program several times a year for beginner’s looking to try BJJ.
